Primeros Auxilios (First Aid)

For his early work Primeros Auxilios (First Aid), Jesús ‘Bubu’ Negrón created a cast for the broken left leg of the deteriorated public sculpture of Puerto Rico’s first boxing champion, Sixto Escobar, which stands in front of the stadium bearing his name. Sixto Escobar is the island's first boxing champion and happens to be originary from Barceloneta, Bubu's hometown. The artist’s application of first aid to the monument commented on the lack of historical memory on the island, and paid tribute to one of Puerto Rico’s forgotten popular heroes. His act ultimately obliged city authorities to restore the statue to its former glory six months later the intervention.
