Memes estandarte (campaña para la concienciación y la activación del barrio) in collaboration with the Brigada PDT

[Standard memes (campaign for the awareness and activation of the neighborhood)]

2015. Displaced Images / Images in Space: 4th San Juan Poly/Graphic Triennial curated by Gerardo Mosquera, Alexia Tala and Vanessa Hernández.

For the 4th San Juan Poly/Graphic Triennial Negrón decided to share his assigned budget with the Brigada PDT, to support the recuperation work the group was undertaking in the neighborhood. Residents were hired to recuperate a derelict building-turned-crack den and parallely, Negrón developped a visual campaign made of memes to communicate and activate the process. Memes circulated online and offline, as they were also printed as banners and hanged in the area, in order to reach and engage the whole neighborhood in the project.

Brigada PDT is a community working group formed by the residents of Puerta de Tierra (a former maroon settlement and working-class neighborhood undergoing gentrification) aimed at the conservation of the neighborhood, the preservation of its history and the care of its people. Under the slogan "Aquí vive gente" (People Live Here), the Brigade is organized horizontally and operates through the articualtion of four key concepts: self-management, awareness raising, social innovation and creativity, and collective decision-making. From street murals to anti-Zika virus campaigns, the Brigade seeks to mobilise artistic strategies for the empowering and wellbeing of the community.
