Abstracción de Carnaval(Carnival Abstraction)
2014
Abstracción de Carnaval are a series of work made from collected cardboard boxes, reinforced and painted them over with colored dots on a monochrome background. The colored dot technique comes from the vejigantes masks in Ponce, a city in the south of Puerto Rico, that preserve that decoration as part of their tradition. Vejigantes are a folkloric syncretic character, invoking spirits and devils which take different significations depending on the island's region. Negrón's gesture of abstracting the traditional technique of the masks is part of the artist's interest of operations of reference in abstract and conceptual art, as well as etnographic constructions.
