La Aparición (The Apparition)

2014. Commissioned installation for the Mima & César Reyes collection, Naguabo, Puerto Rico

In commemoration of the Virgin del Carmen, protector of mariners and fishermen, Negrón erected a shrine in her honor inside an old smokestack in the entrance to the town of Naguabo. The installation and resulting event highlighted the economic shift of the area, which has transformed itself from one dependent on the once thriving sugar industry to a fishing village. The piece also served as a lighthouse announcing that the festivities of the Virgin del Carmen were being celebrated that day.
